Why do you play?
I play because I love the game of lacrosse and I love the competition that goes on on the lacrosse field.
Why are you a goalie?
I play goalie because it is probably the most important position on the field. Whenever a goal goes in there is something that you can do to prevent it. I love being in the goal when the game is on the line. There is nothing better than making a last second save to preserve a victory.
How important is the goalie position?
By far the most important position, in my opinion. When the game is on the line, the goalie has to stand in there knowing that he or she has the responsibility in preserving the victory and could always have a hand in saving the last second chance. When a goalie is playing their best it can be the most demoralizing for the other team. When they take good shots and the goalie has been saving them they will think twice about shooting again. I have seen games where one team has outshot an opponent by 30 shots, but lost because the other teams goalie had 20 or so saves.
Any advice for aspiring goalies?
My advice to goalies is to stick with it and try to go to as many goalie camps as possible. There are some really great goalie coaches out there that I owe all my success to. When I was young I struggled in net, but after a few years of working with the best goalie coaches I raised my game to a whole new level. Also, don't worry about it when you let in a goal. The worst thing to do is to dwell on a previous occurrence during a game. When you do that you just open up the flood gates for more goals. Just concentrate on the next shot.
Quote regarding the goalie position
The Goalie position is 75% mental and 25% physical. If you know before the next shot that you are going to save it then you ultimately will.
