“The growth of the
Notre Dame women’s lacrosse program from a first-year varsity
program in 1997 to a potential national power took a big step
in 2002 under the direction of head coach Tracy Coyne.
During the 2002 campaign, Coyne saw her program make its biggest
jump as the Irish turned in their most successful season ever.
Notre Dame finished the year with a 13-5 overall record and advanced
to the NCAA tournament for the first time in the program's history.
While there, the Irish won their first NCAA game before losing
in the quarterfinals to eventual champion Princeton. The Irish
finished the year ranked seventh in the nation. She also saw her
first two players selected as all-Americans as Kathryn Lam and
Danielle Shearer were both second team selections.”
