Importance of Goalie Position The goalie position is very important to the defense and to the team. It is the defense's job to force the opponent's attack to take shots under pressure or from limited angles. If everyone else does their job, but the goalie doesn't stop the shot, the team may lose the game. The goalie position is the only one where a mistake, or weakness, results in a direct point on the scoreboard. If a goalie makes a couple big saves, it gives the rest of the team confidence.
