Why do you play?
I like playing sports because it keeps me active and gives me arena in which I can forget about my school work for a couple of hours. It's a form of catharsis when I am stressed out and it provides me with a place to unleash my inherent "need" for competition!
Why are you a goalie?
I enjoy being a goalie because I work well under pressure. My best games have been those where my team has gone into overtime, championship tournaments, or competitive rival games. I like the feeling that whatever I do has the chance of winning, or losing, a hard game; in fact, that's what motivates me to really step it up.
How important is the goalie position?
I believe that the goalie position is one of, if not the, most important positions on the field. Defense starts with the home positions and ends with YOU. YOU have the last chance to save that game winning goal and send a heated battle into overtime so your team has another chance to win it.
Any advice for aspiring goalies?
I would have to say focus. Focus on everything: the ball, your angles, your weaknesses, your strengths, your defense, everything. With experience and mental attitude comes skill and success so just realize that it takes time and effort to be the best goalie that you can be.
Quote regarding the goalie position
The other team is going to score; that's the point of the game. It's what you do in reaction to each goal that determines your success as a goalie. If you get down on yourself and dwell on the last shot, you don't stand a chance; you'll just learn to start hoping that the ball stays with your attackers. But if you learn to say to yourself, "I got the next one" and erase that last goal from your memory, your confidence and mental focus will not falter and you will succeed to your potential.

Carissa Medeiros became one of the best DII goalie in WLAX during our run to the NCAA's last May. She became the goalie she is today and developed most of her confidence and leadership skills in leading Stonehill WLAX to the 2002 NCAA DII National Championship Game vs. West Chester. Carissa CARRIED our team on her back in the NCAA Semifinals vs. C.W. Post. She played the most amazing game I have ever seen a goalie have in Championship Play, for Men's or Women's' Lacrosse.....since last May, Carissa has picked up right where she left off and is having an incredible senior year in goal for Stonehill WLAX. She is playing with so much confidence and has become and even more vocal and stronger leader on the field with our defense, while improving all her skills especially her clears and play out of the goal in unsettled situations.......This from a player who joined Stonehill WLAX with VERY limited H.S. instruction or coaching and who has simply MADE HERSELF into one of the best goalies in DII WLAX through sheer hard work, determination and her willingness to be the best and not let her teammates down. I have never been more proud of how far a player has come and developed during her years in our program, in her personal life, as a student and as a lacrosse player, than I am of Carissa. Her never-say-die attitude and willingness to get better every day and to have some fun along the way too has kept our entire lacrosse team loose and yet focused this season on our ultimate goal of winning the NCAA DII Championship in May. Carissa, also one of the most dedicated and well rounded female student athletes at Stonehill College, still works on becoming a better goalie every day and works on her weaknesses which has inspired me as a coach and her teammates that anything is possible. This lacrosse program will not be the same without Carissa and I will very much miss Carissa the person most of all and working with her in goal, too. Still she is playing like an NCAA Championship Goalie every day in practice and in games all during the 2003 season, so I think it very fitting if we could send her and the other Stonehill WLAX seniors off with a DII WLAX National Championship in May. No one deserves it more than Carissa and without her stellar play, we would not have won BIG GAMES vs. West Chester and C.W. Post to be in a position to return to the NCAA's......It's been my most rewarding season as the Head Coach of Stonehill WLAX and I certainly have Carissa to thank for that, along with all of her teammates. In my book, Carissa is a champion and thus deserves a championship!
