Why do you play?
I love my team and the game of lacrosse.
Why are you a goalie?
I was a competitive swimmer for 12 years and my freshman year at Denison I swam, but I burned out. So, I thought I would try my luck with lacrosse. My sophomore year in college when I was trying out for the team, the coach asked me if I wanted to try the goal. She needed a back up goalie and she said I had a good personality for the position (loud, a little bit crazy, not afraid of the ball, good field sense). I gave it a shot and ended up starting after a few games for the rest of the year.
How important is the goalie position?
I never realized it until I became a goalie, but we are VERY important. We need to stay calm and composed and very focused. Yes, it does get through 11 other players until it comes to you, but you're the last line of defense. Also, I'm sick of the stereotype that the goalies are the unathletic players. Goalies have to be in great shape to play well, they must be agile and quick on their feet. Furthermore, not only must a goalie be physically fit, she must be mentally fit. You've got to be the rock, the stronghold.
Any advice for aspiring goalies?
Shots will go in, it's part of the game. After a shot goes in, think about it for about two seconds and then move on. You can't dwell on past shots, it'll drive you crazy. Also, you need to work hard in practice to improve each day. You need to practice hard so when you get to a game it is automatic. Also, don't think during the game, just react and step to the ball. Oh, and you can't be afraid to get hit. I like my multiple bruises (it means you're tough).
Quote regarding the goalie position
Don't think, just react.

Abbe had an AMAZING season. She stepped up huge in several games to keep the team alive. We played some of the top teams in the country and Abbe was able to get the job done. She has worked so hard since starting playing goalie 3 years ago that this season is a true testament to her work ethic and leadership. I've never see any player pick up the game in any position, let alone goalie, and perform at the level that she has in such a short time.
