Lacrosse Number & Why When I first made varsity, I was given the number 1 because I was a goalie and the only freshman on the team. So as a returning sophomore I wanted a more representative number. Since I have always been pretty conscious of my cultural history, I chose the number 6 for the six million Jews who died in the Holocaust.

Why do you play?
I play lacrosse for many reasons, but first and foremost, there is no place I would rather be than on a lacrosse field. Since the day I picked up a stick and stepped onto the grass, I felt completely comfortable and in control playing lacrosse. As you get older, lacrosse is a lot about the friendships you build and the values you learn like work ethic, teamwork, and discipline, but the passion for the game is what really drives you to play.
Why are you a goalie?
I started my career at midfield, and I always enjoyed scoring, but I got bored of running up and down the field, and I hated having to take righty face-offs. I switched to goalie and found that I could run around the field and start the offense just the same while also being an integral part of the defense.
How important is the goalie position?
I come from a family of goalies, starting from my grandfather and continuing with my brother and sister in college, so I have always heard about how important the goalie is. The goalie has to be the quarterback of the team, the leader who everyone looks to. The Detroit Red Wings proved that you don't need a great goalie to win a championship, but I would consider this to be the exception rather than the rule.
Any advice for aspiring goalies?
The lacrosse goalie should be one of the best athletes on the field. Young goalies should always work hard and believe in themselves, because it takes both practice and confidence to be a successful goalie. You should also thank your parents because being a parent of a goalie is extremely nerve-wracking, and my parents have had to deal with three of them.
Quote regarding the goalie position
A great goalie stops all the shots he is supposed to and some of the shots he isn't supposed to.

Comments from 2003:

Andrew's play has been very good. He had 15 saves in the win at Penn [on April 6]. While he is good in the net, he's athletic ability makes our clearing and transition game much more effective. He is very fun to watch play!

- Head Coach Rick Sowell
