Why do you play?
I like the challenge that lacrosse gives me. It forces me to be in great shape and to be mentally ready for anything. I also love being part of a team. The girls on my team are my best friends both on and off the field.
Why are you a goalie?
To be honest, I became a goalie because I didn't like running that much. But little did I know that being a goalie makes you just as exhausted (from the constant mental readiness that is required). I like the feeling that I get when I make a save. Its such an adrenaline rush playing goalie. The position presents a lot of pressure because your play can either make or break the team. I love knowing that my play has such a significant impact on the outcome of the game.
How important is the goalie position?
A goalie is super important. Your attitude and play will set the tempo for a game. A team's outcome most often depends on how well your defense plays, and the goalie is in charge of the defense.
Any advice for aspiring goalies?
Footwork is key to becoming a good goalie. Fast feet can be the most important part of being a goalie. There are tons of drills that you can do for working on footwork. Bunny hops, skiing, or footfire will all increase your agility and speed. Jumping rope will help with this as well. Another thing is to make sure you constantly talk. You see the entire field, you are in charge of your defense. For starters, you can simply make sure you tell your defense where the ball is on the field. Eventually you should be telling the defense who is responsible for sliding to the ball.
Quote regarding the goalie position
"The thing about our team, who cares what the stats are or what the scoreboard says, you come through when needed." Derek Jeter
