Coming from the Midwest:

Daring to Take the Plunge for Lacrosse
By Nick Burnash
November 2003

What’s up! My name is Nick Burnash. I am a 17-year old junior who now attends Trinity-Pawling School in Pawling, New York. Trinity-Pawling is an all male college preparatory school for students from around the world. I used to live in Flint, Michigan, a little city about an hour north of Detroit, with my dad Mark, my mom Maria, my brother Chris and our black lab Bauer. I play hockey and lacrosse at T-P while studying my brains out and I am now writing for GN’s The REAL.

I first heard about T-P from Joe Tweed, the head lacrosse and a college counselor at Trinity- Pawling. I met Mr. Tweed while attending a lax camp last summer. We spoke about the possibilities of me playing for him next season. He was very interested in me transferring and needed a goalie for next year…..what a shock!

Where I'm from, lacrosse isn't big and rarely any kids go on to play college lacrosse never mind get approached by a boarding school coach from out East. I still can’t believe that I am here today!

After camp, I went through the application process, though unsure if I wanted to make the commitment and leave Michigan. After receiving the acceptance letter, I must admit I became nervous. At that point, I really didn't want to go. Somehow my father talked me into it and the first two weeks was really rough. I didn't like being far from home — this was my first time away for an extended period. I had to leave my friends, family and loved ones. Once at T-P, I got homesick and became miserable. Then it started to get better, and now it is awesome!

I can't say enough of the transition. I would like to thank especially my parents, who have done all of this for me, without them I would not be at this school, getting the opportunity of a lifetime. I would also like to thank all of family; I appreciate every single one of them. I would like to thank Mr. Tweed, who got me this good opportunity and kept me here, and finally I would to thank GN!

I would like to end with some good advice for some young lacrosse players and even young kids in general: when you see or have an opportunity, DO NOT DARE PASS IT UP. No matter the circumstances. You will never have another chance in your life to be a better athlete, a better student, and most of all, a better person!

until next time…..
Nick
