Goalie of the Week

Tillman Johnson
Goalie of the Week: April 14, 2003

4/17/03 Update: Congrats goes out to Tillman Johnson for making the 2003 All-ACC Men's Lacrosse Team -- his second consecutive year being named to the team. Tillman is the first Cavalier goalie named All-ACC two seasons in a row in nearly 20 years.

Tillman Johnson, recently named ACC Player of the Week, is Goalie Nation's Goalie of the Week. Tillman, a junior at the University of Virginia, made an outstanding performance when the Cavaliers won against North Carolina, 10-7. He made 14 saves and led the defensive unit with 7 ground balls. Johnson's stellar play held the Tar Heels to their fewest goals of the season, which is not a first for Virginia this season -- they have also held four other opposing teams to their lowest score.

So far this season, Tillman has played 533 minutes, made 101 saves, allowed 70 goals, has a 7.88 goals allowed average, and a save percentage of .591%. His highest total of saves in one game was against Towson, when he made 15 saves.

Lacrosse Accomplishments at Virginia:

  • preseason first-team All-American by Face Off Yearbook
  • became the the first sophomore goalie named All-ACC since UVa’s J.B. Meyer in 1983
  • is just the fifth sophomore goalie named to the all-conference squad
  • his 173 saves last season are the most by a UVa goalie since Chris Sanderson had 190 in 1996
  • his two-year total of 325 saves are the most after two years by any goalie in school history
  • is 12th in UVa history in saves and sixth in career save percentage
  • honorable mention All-American the last two seasons, the first UVa goalie to earn All-America recognition in consecutive seasons since Rodney Rullman from 1973-75

Interview about the Game

GN: What were you thinking about during the game?
TJ: During the game I was just trying to stay relaxed and focused. I wanted to have complete concentration on what was going on and let the game come to me.

GN: How did you feel after the game?
TJ: After the game of course I was happy that we won. I was glad to see the entire team get back on track and play a solid game.

GN: Before the game began, did you know that this was your day to excel?
TJ: Before the game I felt good. I was relaxed and focused on the game ahead. I never really know before the game whether or not I am going to excel or not. I just know that I have a job to do and try to mentally prepare myself every time I step on the field.

GN: How did you mentally prepare for the game?
TJ: Before games I like to picture every scenario that could happen in the game and play it out in my head. This allows me to be mentally ready for anything that they are going to do.

GN: Have you gelled with the defense?
TJ: The defense is a great group of guys. We are all very close friends on and off the field and look out for one another. I definitely feel like the defense has gelled, however there is always room to improve. We know we can be better as a defensive unit and that is what we work on everyday in practice.
